	About Us The organizers of this event are a group of Mentors, Social Workers, and Community Volunteers who have a passion for helping San Diego’s foster youth. The County of San Diego has a Volunteer Mentor Program that matches children in the foster care system with an adult mentor. In order for an increased number of foster children to have a mentor and so that the community is more aware of the Mentor Program, the County has worked in collaboration with The Rock Church Step-Up Foster Youth Mentor Ministry. This Ministry was founded by Lisa Walker who has been recruiting mentors for the County since 2004. The result of a faith-based organization working with a community-based organization has been phenomenal! There are approximately 220 mentors matched with a child in foster care. The Step-Up Foster Youth Mentor Ministry is responsible for approximately 80 of those matched. The Step-Up Ministry and the County work hand-in-hand in an effort to change the lives of children in foster care. Mentors provide commitment and consistency and the hope for a better future. When a foster child is moved to a different home, taken away from his/her school, community, neighborhood and friends, their mentor is there. A mentor can assist a foster child with anything from academic performance to social and personal development. Mentors can provide the tools necessary for successful life skills. The 2nd Annual “Youth in Paradise” Walk and Festival at NTC South Promenade at LIberty Station on September 20, 2008 has been organized in order for the community to be aware of the need for mentors, as well as, to raise funds to provide foster children with life enriching recreational opportunities. Such opportunities would include attending plays, musical and dance performances, community cultural events, athletic events, visiting museums and science and nature centers. The funds will also be used to assist foster children in financing the costs associated with participating in extracurricular fine arts, music and sports. We would greatly appreciate your support by way of PARTICIPATION in the 2nd ANNUAL “YOUTH IN PARADISE” WALK AND FESTIVAL AT NTC SOUTH PROMENADE AT LIBERTY STATION to benefit San Diego’s foster youth.
